My Theatre Profile
I have always been around theatre since I was young, my brother was always in shows, and my mother was a director. When I knew I wanted to start performing was when I was around three years old. I was following my older brother when it was after one of his shows and everyone was congratulating him and saying he did a fantastic job with great big smiles on their faces. For some reason that made me want to start performing, from just seeing how you could bring smiles and joy to people by doing what you love to do. I’ve been doing musical theatre since I was four and I started to take dance classes when I was six. From then I would perform in my studios Nutcracker performances. I have also taught at many summer camps as a dance teacher and been a choreographer for two shows.
I mostly did musical theatre when I was younger but I did my first straight play my freshman year of high school with my schools after school theatre program. I have been a part of every show after that taking a break from musical theatre. I have also opened up to trying out and taking male roles in plays and trying new theatre communities. I tend to work well with every cast I have had the opportunity to be a part of. I tend to help my cast mates and tech crew wherever I can, hoping to make every show process as easy as it can be for everyone.

2020-21
Oct.5th-8th.2020
For the first week of classes we usually met for the beginning of class and did a catch up and warm up for the day and then split off to do individual work for the rest of the period. For the week I had worked on my solo theatre project. For my project I have chosen Steven Berkoff for my theorist because he works with movement and with my past dance experience I thought it would be a good fit. Another reason I had chosen Berkoff is because I read somewhere that he had seen the actors as dolls and toys that he could shape into his own scene and play with them that he wanted. For some odd reason that had stuck with me over the time that I was looking for a theorist so I took that as a gut instinct.
Oct.12-16.2020
For the week I started my research on Steven Berkoff. Starting with the context and looking at where he came from and his family life and where he studied and a bit of who he is as a person. I found out that he studied movement and theatre at Ecole Internationale de Theatre de Jacques Lecoq, and that his main focus was on mime. For next week I am hoping to look more into the context but more about what was happening around the world and in the world of theatre to see how that impacted Berkoff’s theories.
Oct.19-23.2020
During this week I had the intention of looking at the historical context around Berkoff but when I was doing my research on that I came across some of his inspirations and how they impacted his theories and I sort of fell into that hole. Berkoff was very inspired by movement and that was his main focus on most things. Some other theorists that had inspired Berkoff were Laurence Olivier, Bertolt Brecht, Antonin Artaud, Jean-Louis Barrault, Jacques Le Coq. All of these actors and theorists inspired Berkoff mostly for their movement and he took some aspects of their theories and turned them into his own.
Jan.4-8.2021
For this first week of continuing my solo theatre project for this mod. With my research that I have done so far on Berkoff I have narrowed down that I want to focus on the repetitive motion and movement within his theory. I have a monologue picked out that has many repetitive words and phrases and high emotion which ties in nicely with Berkoff’s theory. I also started reading “Steven Berkoff and the Theatre of self-performance” by Robert Cross, I’ve mainly focused on some specific chapters that I have felt like would give me a better understanding. Over the next few weeks I would like to look for more primary sources, such as interviews with Berkoff and he has any sort of writings. I would also like to start my memorization and choreography of my monologue.
2019-20
Sept.23-27
At the beginning of the week we talked more in-depth about the collaborative project and how it will work and how we should treat one another. We also had the assignment of bringing in a quote, a picture, or a picture of an object, and it had to have meant something to you in some way be it an object that had important meaning to you or a picture that was a memory or a quote that stuck with you. The exercise we did with this was we had sticky notes and we could write something that we felt like this picture or thing was to us and afterward we talked about it. The sticky note exercise was interesting to me because I got to see how other people reacted to other things of importance, some people dug for deeper meaning and some just wrote what came to mind without looking too much into it. I thought that this was a helpful exercise to see how the others thought about things and it gave me an idea of what I might want to bring in next week when we do the exercise again.
Sept.31-Oct.4
This week we brought more pictures, quotes and other things to continue the brainstorming for the collaborative theatre project. There were a lot more images and things to look into and it seemed to lean more into slightly more heavier topics, some things to just look a bit more deeper into. After doing the same process with the sticky notes with this set of things we narrowed it down to 6 pictures that we wanted to create something with. Then we brainstormed on the whiteboard, not quite trying to decide where we wanted to go with the whole project but just tried to figure how all pictures related and many ideas that we could create from that. We brainstormed for the entire period the next class we had that week It was interesting to me once again to see how other people in the class think, and I was also surprised by myself on how much I spoke myself because I thought that I would just stay quiet and write whatever on the board, but it was interesting how much I wanted to participate and share my ideas with the group.
Oct 7-10
Throughout this week we had narrowed down to the topic that we wanted to explore more which was stereotypes, most importantly stereotypes in high school and how they might be influenced by the media. The seniors all brought in an improv game to see if we can relate it to stereotypes, but we seemed to struggle with that. Though we could play the game and have fun we all had a slightly hard time trying to completely play a stereotype, we could play simple characteristics of a stereotype, like a popular girl or a tough guy, but we struggled with making the setting more serious and truly creating a scene and not just having fun with a game. A take away I had from it was mostly a question, why did we have such a hard time being serious unscripted? Why was it so much easier to play the game and make it comedic and not serious? Why was that always the go-to? When I thought about it I thought about how it wasn’t because we weren’t mature about it cause we could have a serious discussion, it was just hard to try and lead a scene with no real plan with such a serious tone. Trying to figure out a scene with a topic on your mind but no real plan is hard even with it being comedic, but wanting it to take a more serious route made it even more challenging. And I thought it good that we talked about how we had a hard time making it serious because we didn’t know what the boundaries about would be if we did take a more serious and real route. So I think it would be interesting to explore that a bit more.
Nov.4-8
This week the juniors started a timeline all about theatre. We decided to split up all the work so that we all had even work and so creating the timeline would go faster. We all tried to choose the times of theatre we weren't familiar with so that we weren’t learning about information we already knew. The three times of theatre I researched were French Neoclassicism, Medevil theatre, and Realism. All three I have heard of but not having looked into as much, out of all of these times I would say I had the most knowledge about Realism before I did all the reasearch. While doing the reasearch I found myself being very interested in Medieval theatre more than the other two types of theatre, out of all the types I looked mostly into Medievil. It was interesting to me how it was some sort of a banned art, and then only performed in churches to show stories from the bible, then how the went to the street to perform but it was like a bunch of booths with different plays. I found it interesting to read about the other types my classmates were looking at, one that caught my eye was Naturalism. I found this assignment helpful in a way, it showed the different types of theatre we can look more into and I know that it will be a helpful resource in the future.
Nov.11-15
This week we started reading The Rivals in class. Its a play written in 1775 by Richard Brinsley, its seen as a comedy of manners play. Reading the play this week had been very entertaining to me, I like how apparently the characters names kind feed into the characteristics of the character. I also enjoy the storyline, since it is a comedy of manners there is a slightly more complex storyline that can sort of confuse your brain, but I like how this play has a strange plotline but not one that is too complex that you aren’t lost the entire time. I think that since the plot isn’t too confusing the playwright was able to create more with the characters and give them more to play around with and with fun characters the story becomes a lot better. I enjoy reading it in class and seeing my classmates reaction to it as well, I also like reading it aloud even though it is difficult since it is in old English because it was written in 1775, I feel like reading it aloud is more fun cause it brings the story more alive for me.
Nov.18-22
This week we continued to read the rivals and then we finished. I enjoyed the play overall, I did feel like there were points where I thought that it was sort of sporadic. There were scenes that even though they were good and comedic, they also didn’t add too much to the story like other side scenes would. But overall I really enjoyed the play. After we finished the play we were presented the assignment for the play, which is a mini director’s notebook. We have to talk about the context of the play and give a simple synopsis and choose a scene from the play and create blocking and design for it, also direct my fellow classmates in the scene. I really like the thought of blocking and directing a scene. I have blocked scenes and I have taught choreography but I have never directed someone in a scene so I am quite excited about it.
Nov.25-27
We started working on our director’s notebook this week, also choosing the scenes we all wanted to do and read through them. I chose a scene between Bob Acres and Jack Absolute. Two characters who are in love with the lead women, Lydia. Acres is unaware of Jack’s love for her since Jack poses as Beverly the man that Lydia claims to be in love with. In this scene, Acres is telling Jack how he is going to challenge Beverly in a duel to fight for Lydia’s hand, Acres asks Jack to deliver the challenge to Beverly since he “knows” him, and asks Jack if he could talk him up to scare Beverly. I chose this scene cause I love the comedic irony in it, the fact that Acres is asking Jack to deliver a challenge and to talk highly of Acres all to a man that doesn’t really exist because Jack created him to woo Lydia. With my two other classmates’ scenes, I play Falkland and Jack Absolute. Both scenes are pretty funny and I am excited to see how all the scenes turn out
Dec.2-6
We worked a bit more on notebooks and started blocking one of the scenes this week. While working on my notebook I was realizing I was having a hard time with my scene. I really like my scene but I was struggling cause I would write something down then think it through and picture it in my head and then I hated it. I didn’t want the two character to just be standing and talking to each other with absolutely no movement because that isn’t enjoyable to watch. So I went through many ideas of movements for the scene, trying to make it enough so that you stay interested in the scene but not too much that it is over the top. After the many ideas I had of the scene, I came down to a pretty good blocking plan that I like the look of at the moment. We plan on just working on blocking the scenes next week so I know that if I don’t like something when I direct it I know that my classmates will work with me and my perfectionist self.
Jan.21-24
Through this week the other juniors and I continued to work on our scenes and cleaned them up a bit more. We practiced them until we felt like we could get through the scene without stumbling as much and actually trying to develop the characters more. We also performed our scenes to the seniors in the class. I feel as if they could have been better or more interesting, for my scene personally I wish that I chose a different one because mine was too boring in my opinion. I chose the scene because I loved the ironic comedy in the scene, but you don’t really see the irony unless you know the play. As for the scenes that I was acting in, I felt like I could have done better I will give myself the excuse that the lines were still not memorized and I wasn’t fully comfortable with them. So I was so fixated on getting the words out that I didn’t put much into my characters as I should have. With this process I really enjoyed it, I didn’t think I would like to direct a scene as much as I did and I would like to do it more in the future but I don’t want to limit myself next time when I get the opportunity.
Jan.27-31
We started this week by looking at a woman performing the same scene but performing it with different theorists. It was really interesting to see how the different theorists affected the performance of the piece. I never realized just how many ways of acting there was and how there are people in history and in the world that create these forms of acting. After we watched the videos we were introduced our next project, which is we need to pick a theorist and research about them and find out what their theory and form are and put a presentation about it and them together.
Feb.3-7
This week we continued on working on our mini theorist project. I had already done little research about Brecht and Epic Theatre for the timeline project but through out this week I found out a lot more information then I did during that project. I found that Brecht like to detach the audience from the play, that he doesn't want them to have an emotional connection with the story or characters. His intention was to get the audience intellectual opinion on the show, he wanted the audience to think and to learn the morals he was trying to portray. I also found out it is very common for Brecht's plays to have a character break the fourth wall. Which I found very interesting because in my past experience breaking the fourth wall makes a more intimate connection between that certain character and the audience but I guess he had them break the fourth wall to give the audience documentation.
Feb.10-14
Augusto Boal
- This was a theorist that I found super interesting. I didn't have any prior knowledge about this theorist but I found his way of theatre very creative and a way to possibly heal from situations. A big moment I had while watching this presentation was when I realized that this theorist was similar to mine but also the opposite. Boal liked for the audience to have a connection to the story and to be empathic with the characters, while Brecht wanted the audience to be detached and he alienated the audience
- Another theorist I've never heard of. I also found this one very interesting because it was more portraying the story with your body like a dance compared to a way of vocal acting and just different techniques to tell a story. How the way of the dance to contort your body in a more unusual way. I also found it interesting how they paint the entire body white, but my guess is that is from the inspiration from kabuki.
- While finishing this presentation this week I found that Brecht was a Marxian and that influenced the way he wrote his plays. I also found out that he had actors play multiple characters as another method of having a detachment of their character, also there was blocking with the actors facing completely away from the audience so their backs were to them, also as a detachment method for the audience. I really enjoyed doing this project cause it opened my eyes more to the different methods and techniques of acting and that there is just one way to do everything.
Feb.24-28
This week we were introduced to the world tradition project. We were given video examples to look over to see what we will be doing for this project. We looked at examples of ‘Punch and Judy’ and ‘Commedia Dell’Arte. While looking at these examples we were supposed to grade them and we were given a rubric to grade off of and I thought all of them were very well done but looking at the rubric I could see some aspects they were missing. When doing that assignment it made me sort of nervous to do this project because it is sort of an intimidating project for me. But I know that if I choose a tradition I am really interested in I shouldn’t be worried too much.
Mar.2-6
This week we focused on choosing a world tradition for our projects. I look at a good amount but the ones I was really looking at and the ones that I found most interesting because were Medieval theatre and Victorian Melodrama. I found Medieval theatre very interesting because it is a time of theatre I don't know much about. I have researched a little about it but it made me want to know more about it, sadly there were very little sources that would help me down the line of my research so I decided to go with my second option which was Victorian Melodrama. Melodrama was my second option because I also know very little about it and I guess in some way my head goes to stereotypical Melodrama, which I believe is the actual style of it but I am interested in knowing the other aspects of it and what is put into it to create this sort of theatre.
Mar.9-13
This week we continued our world tradition research project. Throughout the week I looked at some video examples and some videos of the history of Victorian Melodrama. I also looked into the body language of it all because that is what I want to focus on. I’m looking at how the different stock characters act in terms of their body language. The reason I chose gestures for my moment of theatre is because of my dance background, I have also been told that I have a talent for being able to change my body language to match a character. So I find it interesting to see the different ways they used body language during the 18th century melodrama period.
Mar.16-20
For the day that we met this week we started our lesson on Commedia Dell’Arte. We first had a small conversation about what it was and then we all split off with our own little section to research and put a mini presentation together to present to the others about Commedia. Mine was the purpose of Commedia, like where they performed and what was the style of their performing. I found out that there were troupes of Commedia performers and they commonly performed on the streets and small theatres and stages. They tended to perform on streets since the troops weren’t typically allowed to perform because the church believed they were doing the devil's work because a lot of the performances were done in gibberish, so people believed they were speaking to the devil. This was a fact that I found most interesting, I found it interesting because knowing that they also had most of the shows be improv with a basic storyline to follow. But it seems ridiculously hard to do an entire show of improv and speaking normally so their way of speaking gibberish is to show the audience what is happening because of their body language and the tone of their gibberish and it also communicates to the actor where they're going with it. I found that aspect the most interesting about this mini project of Commedia.
Mar.23-27
For this week we went over the little presentations we had done last week. Since the three topics we looked at seemed to overlap just a bit there were some repeats of information. But after we had gone over it all we got our other mini project assignment. The topic I was given was characters, I was quite excited to look further into the stock characters of Commedia because I was excited to see what shows and movies that I could relate to. Knowing that Commedia is still seen in some parts of everyday shows and movies is super fascinating to me because it shows how much of an impact it has made.
Mar.30
Over the weekend we were given the assignment to look at a certain commedia character to look at and try to make a moment of theatre out of that character. The assignment itself was interesting but for me personally was a fail. Reasons why is because there were certain parts of me that couldn’t connect enough with the character enough to feel confident and I think it is because commedia is mostly revolved around improv and as an actor improv is a challenge for me, so I think that is why I didn’t have the confidence to do it. When we had class on monday the whole presenting our moment of theatre also didn’t work very well because everyone sort of felt the same in terms of the freedom we had with it and we were just not sure what to do. After the mini fail of an assignment we decided to go back to our own world tradition project, so we started to work on that again.
Apr.2
Starting up with my Victorian Melodrama again I started to look at my books that I got for the project. I haven’t started to read through them yet because I want to look through the table of contents and get a feel of what information the book is going to supply. I don’t plan to read them all individually but I wanted to know which one I should start with and possibly go to for the most information. In the pile of books I have the one that looks like it will give me quick and easy information in terms of just looking at the table of contents and seeing where I can find the answer seems to be “Cambridge Companion To Victorian And Edwardian Theatre”, So I plan to go back to that one often.
April.13-17
Through the week I have been putting together what I have found so far about the content of Victorian melodrama. I put a mini presentation together to show all of the content and then my class gave me feedback on what I needed to keep or expand on. Places that I needed to expand were the social history of it. I needed to figure out how society was affected by it and how society itself affected the melodrama and the shows. I also wanted to find out how I wanted to do my moment of theatre and I chose gestures for my moment of theatre.
April.20-23
This week I searched for a monologue to use for my moment of theatre. I looked at scenes from the Picnic and some popular monologues for women. I was struggling to find which emotion I will want to portray in my moment, because there are many different kinds of emotions I could show with the gestures of melodrama. I mainly was looking at ones that portrayed a woman in love, be it overwhelmed happiness in love or anger at her loved one. As well as looking at monologues I was also researching about the different gestures that were used to portray certain emotions, and reasons for some of the gestures so the audience can see clearly what emotion the scene is set around. I think by next week I want to have a monologue picked out.

"Where" Pantomime Reflection
My “Where” pantomime wasn’t my best idea or performance. The pantomime was set in a bathroom where I would go on to get ready for my day, such as brushing my teeth, combing my hair and putting my beanie on. My reservations were I could have shown the mirror in the bathroom a bit more and brushed my teeth better. My attractions were that you could tell where I was which was the point of the pantomime and that my facial expressions were good because you could tell I had just woken up. What I have learned from this that I will take into consideration for the future is to make the objects around more there in a sense and to take a breath and to imagene that I am in where the pantomime is taking place and then call curtain and to take my time.

"Who" Pantomime Reflection
My “Who” pantomime was better than my “Where” pantomime in my opinion. I felt more practiced then I did with my “Where” and calmer when I performed it. My pantomime was a little kid coloring and giving their finished masterpiece to their parent. My reservations were that I probably should have been more upstage because I was on my stomach on the ground more downstage and not everybody could see me, I was also told that my posture could have displayed more of a childlike demeanor when I skipped in. My attractions were that you could tell that I was a child because of the way I colored because I held my hand all around the crayon also my overall demeanor was very childlike. What I will probably take away from this to put into my next pantomime will probably to think through each little detail of my character and for the whole pantomime not just concentrate to get my character perfect for one certain part but more like the whole pantomime.
"What" Pantomime Reflection
My What pantomime was a photographer struggling to take pictures of kids who would just not stay still no matter what they tried to do. The solution I wrote and blocked ways to keep the kid from running and squirming I gave them a piece of candy. My reservations were mostly the same for my other pantomimes, which were I need to slow down and take a moment to breathe and not to rush so much as I do with mostly everything. An attraction that I had was that you could tell that I was becoming more and more frustrated with the child as the pantomime goes go.

Dramatic Structure Pantomime Relflection
I found my dramatic structure pantomime very fun to do and write and practice. It was most definitely my favorite out of all the pantomimes we’ve done cause I just felt like I was putting on a way much longer skit with more layers to it cause of how we needed to make a problem one after the other and I found that very fun. My pantomime was a clumsy person in an antique store. I had my character pick a doll and accidentally break the arm off of it and get their hand stuck in a vase and was unable to get it out, and they are just swinging their arm everywhere and hitting shelves, and then the vase comes flying off and smashes into a wall. The solution to the problem was to sweep the broken vase under a rug.

Learner Profile Traits Reflection
I feel like out of the learner profile traits I’ve used so far in Intro to Theatre class has been Thinker and Caring. I feel like I was a Thinker because I had to actually think very hard when it came to planning out each pantomime and it actually always took me a very long time to plan each one, Because I always wanted it to be better than the one I did before I always wanted to outdo myself every time and some of then I feel like I did kinda achieve that and others not so much. I feel like I was Caring because I would always and try to help my classmates when it came to us practicing out pantomimes and I would always try and give them feedback in a very nice and positive way and point out things they could try and approve on to make it more clear to the audience. I feel like a few traits that I should work on to move forward is Risk taker because I will be extremely shy when it comes to performing in front of the class and its something I want to try and work on. I would also like to work on Inquirer because once again I have a hard time with asking for help and to ask my questions when I am confused with the assignment so that is another trait I would like to work on.

2 Character Cutting Reflection
Out of all of our different exercises, we have done by far I found this one very fun and my favorite. I found it interesting having to play two characters having a conflict and have to portray two different feeling voices and body language. It was challenging but it was a fun kind of challenge. I enjoyed my character cutting very much I really could see the conflicted when I first read it.My character cutting was from “Look Homeward, Angel, the conflict was between Eugene a young man and his mother Eliza. The conflict was the Eugene is done with how his mother has been treating him for all of his life and Eliza feels like her son should grow up. I found myself being the only one who had the dialogue take a more emotional route to it, I didn’t just have anger with both characters and just anger, not any other emotion but I had sadness and shock because that’s how I saw it. I saw both characters being angry, Eugene being angrier than Eliza but I felt like after a while Eugene would give up and show how emotional and vulnerable. I feel like my strength in acting came out a bit more for this exercise because I feel like I can put more emotion to the piece when I can have my voice that’s what I struggled with when we did Pantomime, so overall I feel good about this piece that I did when I performed.

Monologue Reflection
My monologue was Abigail from The Crucible. I felt actually really challenged from this monologue more than I thought it was gonna be. When I was first given this monologue I was like okay this will be easy but as I was doing the written work I realized how hard I’m going to have the monologue. Even though the monologue was challenging I did enjoy it, it was a very dark and twisted monologue and once again very challenging and I always enjoy a challenging monologue and trying out a new and different character than I’m used to. I wasn’t very pleased with myself when it came to my performance, I always feel like I can do better when it comes to the references but I especially feel like that for this. I felt like I could have put a lot more character to it. But I had a fun time with this monologue.

I felt like I could have put a lot more character to it. But I had a fun time with this monologue.
Final Project Reflection
The final project was actually quite fun, at first I was kinda not really excited about it but after a while and working on it I kinda to start liking the idea of it and I really enjoyed the people I worked with. The painting we had to make a scene with was The Marriage Proposal by William Hogarth. My group decided to take a more modern version with it and is based in this time period. The theme for our piece was Duality, we had the bride and the groom and a not so proper lawyer who was flirting with the bride in one side of the vignette and then the father of the bride and two other lawyers one who just wants the money and one who’s actually doing their job. We start the vignette with the bride being very excited about her marriage and not really realizing the lawyer is flirting with her and the groom being more excited for the money than his bride and is seen in his phone and taking selfies while the other two lawyers and the bride's father are talking about the paperwork. The second part of the vignette the father and one lawyer has switched spots and the bride and groom have switched spots to shoe a different time and during this second half, the bride and groom are getting divorced. The bride is seen more sad and disappointed and the groom counties to be on his phone but is more sarcastic and rude, the flirty lawyer counties to flirt with the bride but in a more comforting way, while the other two lawyers are once again are trying to work on the paperwork while the father is grieving about his daughter's divorce. A thing we did with the vignette is that we didn’t change the lines for each half of it we kept them very similar to when the bride and groom were getting married and when they were getting a divorce. I enjoyed this final project I would have felt better to have a longer amount of time with it all but I felt like me and my group did very well and I really enjoyed it.
